Causeway Stays On The Paddington Trail In The Tetrarch

History may not ultimately repeat itself, but so far Causeway (Wootton Bassett) is doing a fine job of mimicking Ballydoyle's recent kingpin Paddington as he completed the Madrid-Tetrarch double on Monday.

Sent off the 9-4 favourite for the Irish 2,000 Guineas trial over the same course and distance, the relative of Magical and Rhododendron worked his way past stablemate Neolithic (Sioux Nation) inside the final furlong en route to a two-length success from Andab (Saxon Warrior). Neolithic was a neck behind in third.

“He's a lovely, big relaxed horse and we always felt that stepping up to a mile would suit him well,” Aidan O'Brien said. “He has his prep done now if the lads want to come back for the Guineas and I'd imagine we'll see what happens in France at the weekend and how Gstaad is.”

“I'd imagine he'll be very comfortable stepping up to a mile and a quarter when the time comes,” he added. “It wasn't a mickey mouse race today, so he'll have learnt a lot. He was only getting motoring going to the line and he's very genuine.”

A full-brother to last year's Irish Oaks third Island Hopping, Causeway is out of a full-sister to Galileo's aforementioned flagship mares Magical and Rhododendron who won an abundance of Group 1 races with the latter producing the brilliant Auguste Rodin (Deep Impact). Out of the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Sun Chariot and Nassau heroine Halfway To Heaven (Pivotal) from the excellent family of Cassandra Go (Indian Ridge), Heaven Of Heavens' yearling colt is by Deep Impact's son Contrail.
